Description:

The Information Technology (IT) Technician Learnership is a structured, accredited 12-month programme that equips learners with the practical and theoretical competencies required to install, configure, maintain, and support computer systems and networks within an organizational environment. The programme develops work-ready IT professionals capable of providing first-line technical support across various ICT environments.

It is designed in accordance with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and supports South Africa’s Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) priorities by preparing learners for critical roles in IT infrastructure and user support.


Purpose of the Programme

The learnership aims to:

  • Develop competent IT technicians capable of diagnosing and resolving hardware and software issues efficiently.

  • Provide learners with hands-on workplace experience in IT operations, helpdesk environments, and system administration.

  • Strengthen youth employability and digital literacy through accredited, industry-driven learning pathways.

  • Address the shortage of skilled ICT support professionals within both public and private sectors.

  • Promote inclusive access to technology careers for South African youth, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.


Programme Structure

The programme combines theoretical learning (30%) with workplace-based practical training (70%) over a 12-month period. Learners are placed in real-world ICT environments to gain exposure to network setup, system support, cybersecurity, and troubleshooting.

  2. Computer Hardware and Peripheral Devices

  3. Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, macOS)

  4. Networking Fundamentals (LAN/WAN, IP, DNS, DHCP)

  5. User and Desktop Support

  6. Server Administration and Virtualization Basics

  7. IT Security and Data Protection

  8. Cloud Services and Storage Management

  9. Helpdesk and Customer Service Skills

  10. Professional Communication and Workplace Readiness

Requirements:

  • Accreditation and Qualification

    This learnership is aligned to the National Certificate: Information Technology – Technical Support (SAQA ID 78964, NQF Level 4) or the Occupational Certificate: IT Technical Support Technician (QCTO), depending on the implementing training provider’s accreditation.
    Learners receive a nationally recognized qualification upon completion, accredited by the MICT SETA or QCTO.
